Billy Graham Dies

Billy Graham preached to approximately 215 million people in 185 countries and advised about a dozen U.S. Many of his sermons can be found on YouTube, and I highly recommend them.

When Graham preached, he said that death was, of course, inevitable. As no one knew when Christ would return, he said, everyone should think instead about the sure thing they did know: the certainty of their own death. While some fundamentalists predicted that some believers would escape death in the Rapture, the evangelist repeatedly insisted that death fell on everyone.

Billy Graham recorded a powerful message on his 95th birthday – “The Cross”. This is a must see.

The Heavenly Man

0

Widespread news coverage of Christian beheadings at the hands of Isis has made most Americans aware of Christian persecution in Muslim countries. What many Americans do not know, is that the Christian Church in China is persecuted just as severely.

The Heavenly Man is the story of Brother Yun, a Chinese Christian persecuted by the Chinese government for his faith and witness of Jesus Christ. His story is one of unimaginable suffering, all the while staying faithful to Jesus Christ.

Brother Yun’s story forces me to face the fact that I do next to nothing for Jesus’s name. Sure I believe Jesus died and rose for my sins, but until recently I had never even read the Bible. Meanwhile, Christians in China cherish every Bible they can smuggle in, only to have them confiscated by the government if discovered.

I am convicted when Brother Yun describes North American churches as “spiritually asleep”. “Knowledge and obedience to God’s word are missing”. He goes on to say that the abundance of material possessions holds us down. To that, I say “AMEN”.

Jesus tells us “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” I sincerely pray for the blessing of persecution for the name of Jesus, and the strength to endure.

I highly recommend “The Heavenly Man” to every American Christian. It is a powerful testimony of what it means to take up our cross and follow Jesus.

The Bible

I’m simply amazed that many people who sincerely believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, have never read it. That’s like never reading a love letter sent from a spouse overseas, or a recipe when your creating a brand new dish. The Bible is God’s lover letter to mankind, with the “recipe” for how to find joy in this life and the next. Why in heaven’s name do so many people make no effort to read it.

When I decided to read the entire Bible, family and friends told me that the Bible is too hard to understand. Perhaps this explains why none of them have ever read it. Just what excuses do we come up with for not reading the Bible? Here are the most common answers given when asked.

  • It’s boring
  • I never get anything out of it
  • Too confusing
  • Makes me sleepy
  • Don’t know where to start
  • Don’t have the time

Examine your heart, do you really believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God? If so, what excuse can there possibly be for not reading it?

The Bible is accessible in many different formats. Take advantage of the internet and its wealth of knowledge and community Bible studies, as well as audiobooks. Stop surfing the web, wasting time on social media, and watching mindless television, and JUST READ IT!

The Great Divorce

0

The “Great Divorce”, written in 1945 by acclaimed apologist C. S. Lewis, is a fictional story about people in hell who are offered an opportunity to go to heaven, and the excuses they use not to.

While I believe the story is amusing, and gives us insight into some of the ways we separate ourselves from God, the story is based on a faulty premise – those in hell/purgatory get a second chance to choose God. The Bible teaches us this is simply not true, there is no second chance. Recalling the story of the rich man in hell calling out to Abraham to have Lazarus, who is in heaven, bring him a drink of water.

“And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.” LUKE 16:26

This is not the only place we’re told there is no second chance.

“I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).

“And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment”. HEBREWS 9:27

It’s comforting to believe we’ll have a second chance to save ourselves from hell, but even if there is, the gospel clearly teaches we aren’t capable of saving ourselves. Only the blood of Jesus can.

I hesitate to recommend this book fearing one might come away from it believing there will be a second chance after death. Since C. S. Lewis prefaces the book with a disclaimer that this book should not be taken as doctrine, I highly recommend it.

CS Lewis is a master at teaching through fiction, making it easier for many to read.  It’s quite an eye opener when you recognize yourself and others in some of the behaviors of the books characters. I think it’s worth a second and third reading. Remember to test all things against the scriptures.

“Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” ACTS 17:11

Enjoy the book, and let us know which character(s) you recognize.

Do Catholics worship Mary?

Roman Catholics have an extremely high view of Mary and have attributed some astounding characteristics and abilities to her, such as her interceding for us, atoning for us, and delivering our souls from damnation. Do Catholics worship Mary? Most Catholics will vehemently protest, saying that they do not WORSHIP Mary, and sincerely believe they don’t. Let’s examine what the Church herself has said.

In his Ineffabilis Deus in 1854, Pope Pius IX established as dogma the immaculate conception of Mary, which preserved her from inheriting original sin. His concluding statements provide a good summary of the Catholic view of Mary.

Let all the children of the Catholic Church, who are so very dear to us, hear these words of ours. With a still more ardent zeal for piety, religion and love, let them continue to venerate, invoke and pray to the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, conceived without original sin. Let them fly with utter confidence to this most sweet Mother of mercy and grace in all dangers, difficulties, needs, doubts and fears. Under her guidance, under her patronage, under her kindness and protection, nothing is to be feared; nothing is hopeless. Because, while bearing toward us a truly motherly affection and having in her care the work of our salvation, she is solicitous about the whole human race. And since she has been appointed by God to be the Queen of heaven and earth, and is exalted above all the choirs of angels and saints, and even stands at the right hand of her only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, she presents our petitions in a most efficacious manner. What she asks, she obtains. Her pleas can never be unheard. gty.org

In addition, here are some quotes from various popes and other Catholic sources.

  • Pope Benedict XV, in 1918 – “Mary suffered with Christ and nearly died with Him when He died, thus she may rightly be said to have redeemed the human race with Christ.”
  • Pope Pius XI, in 1923 – “The virgin of sorrows shared the work of redemption with Jesus Christ.”
  • Pope Leo XIII, in 1891 – “No one can approach Christ except through His mother”.
  • The Catechism, in the Sunday Missal (Catholic Catechism) says, “My salvation depends on Mary’s mediation and union with Christ, because of her exalted position as Mediatrix of all grace.”
  • Vatican II, said, “Mary’s intercession continues to win for us the gift of eternal salvation.”

In the celebration of the Marian year, Pope Pius XII accurately reflected the church’s view of the Virgin Mary when the Pope stood up to give this following pontifical prayer:

“Enraptured by the splendor of your heavenly beauty and impelled by the anxieties of the world, we cast ourselves into your arms, O Immaculate Mother of Jesus and our Mother.  Mary, we adore and praise the peerless richness of the sublime gifts with which God has filled you above every other mere creature from the moment of conception until the day on which, after your assumption into Heaven, He crowned you Queen of the Universe.  O crystal fountain of faith, bathe our hearts with your heavenly perfume! O Conqueress of evil and death, inspire in us a deep horror of sin, which makes the soul detestable to God and a slave of hell! O well-beloved of God, hear the ardent cries which rise up from every heart in this year dedicated to you.  Then tenderly, O Mary, cover our aching wound. Convert the wicked, dry the tears of the afflicted and the oppressed, comfort the poor and humble, quench hatred, sweeten harshness, safeguard the flower of purity, protect the holy Church.  In your name, resounding harmoniously in heaven, may they recognize that all are brothers, and that the nations are members of one family.  Receive, O sweet Mother, our humble supplications, and above all obtain for us on that day, happy with you, that we may repeat before your throne that hymn which is sung today around your altars. You are all-beautiful, O Mary! You are glory, O Mary.  You are the joy, you are the honor of our people!”

In 1745, St. Alphonsus de Liguori wrote a massive book called The Glories of Mary. What de Liguori did was collect all the great tributes to Mary going all the way back to the 5th century, and amasses them in this huge tome. Collective tribute from all the ages to Mary. Here are but a few:

“O Mary, sweet refuge of poor sinners. Assist me with thy mercy. Banish me from the infernal enemies and come thou to take my soul and present it to the eternal judge. My Queen, do not abandon me. I give you my heart and soul.”

“We have confidence, but in thee O most faithful Virgin. O great Mediatress of peace between men and God, the love of all men and of God to whom the honor and benediction with the Father and the Holy Ghost.

“O sovereign Lady, saint of all saints, our strength and our refuge. God, as it were of this world, Glory of Heaven, accept those who love thee.”

“O sovereign Princess. Turn, O Mary, thy loving eyes on me. Look at me and draw me to thee.” Another one: “Mary, Blessed Virgin, Immaculate Queen, I dedicate my family forever to thy service. I appoint thee ruler of my whole house. Bless us, defend us, provide for us, counsel us, comfort us, assist us in our infirmities, especially in the sorrows of death. Granted, we may go to heaven.”

I now place myself in thy hands. Tell me what I must do to recover the favor of my Lord and I will immediately do it. He sends me to thee, that thou mayest help me and He wills that I should have recourse to thy mercy, that not only the merits of thy son, but also that thy intersession may help me to save my soul. To thee, then, I have recourse.

These prayers give us clear evidence that Catholics do WORSHIP Mary. All of these are prayers that belong only to whom? To God. God says, “My glory will I not give to another.” If only Catholics knew the Bible.

The Christian View on Homosexuality

[vc_text_separator title=”What is the Christian View on Homosexuality?” title_align=”separator_align_left”]

Three things that Christians say that I think have to do with homosexualty. First of all, the Good Samaritan parable, and the very model of Jesus dying for people who were oppossing Him. It means that All Christians are duty bound to love and serve their neighbors. Regardless of their beliefs, regardless of whether they’re people of other faiths, people with different views of sexuality.

We are suppose to make this city a great place for everybody to live in regardless of their beliefs. That’s important. We have to love people regardless of where they are on that spectrum of belief.

Secondly, the gospel of Christianity, which is that you’re saved not by good doctrine, or by your good works, but by sheer unmerited grace. It pulls out the self righteousness and the superiority that tends to go along with religious belief. Which has actually made a lot of gay people suffer. A lot of gay people have suffered under that kind of attitude, and I think the gospel takes that away from us. And that is good for gay people.

Thirdly, when the Bible tells us something about how we should live, like sex, money, power; it always does it like this, it says
God created us and therefore God in His word in the bible is giving you directions for how you should live in accord with your own design. It’s not busy work. It’s like when the owners manual comes to a car it says change the oil every so many thousand miles. It’s not busy work it’s saying that’s how the car was designed. If you violate that you’re actually hurting the car. So the Bible does say sex is for a man and a woman inside marriage to nurture love and committment in a long term permanent relationship of marriage. Which means polygamy, it means sex outside of marriage, and it means homosexuality are considered violations of God’s will, but also violations of our own design. So the Bible is actually saying you’re missing out if you do those things. So the Christian view of homosexuality is you’re going against you’re own design and you’re actually missing out on God’s best for you.
